Learn Solr from a Solr committer

Apache Solr training — live online classes, taught by a Solr committer.

Learn Apache Solr from Jan Høydahl — Apache Software Foundation member and Apache Lucene/Solr committer & PMC. Live, instructor-led online classes combined with self-paced online courses. Real training that answers your real search questions — not just a scripted curriculum.

Live & instructor-led

Live online classes

Real classes, taught live online — the same content as a classroom course, with an instructor you can see, talk to and interrupt. Ask questions about your own project as they come up, share your screen, and work through hands-on labs together.

  • 3-hour live sessions, typically 2–3 per week — spread over time so you can digest each session and practice between them.
  • Fully interactive: live instruction, screen sharing, a virtual whiteboard and hands-on labs — not a pre-recorded video.
  • Developer, Operations or tailored tracks — pick the focus your team needs.
  • Open to attendees anywhere, and available as a private class for your team.

Self-paced & online

Online courses

Prefer to learn on your own schedule? Our self-paced online courses let you work through the material whenever it suits you, at your own pace — a great way to get started, or to prepare your team before a live class.

  • Learn anytime, anywhere — start immediately, no scheduling required.
  • Structured lessons built from the same curriculum as the live classes.
  • Combine both: self-paced foundations plus a live class for the deep, hands-on parts.

Curriculum

Course tracks

Solr Developer

For developers integrating Apache Solr into an application: indexing and schema design, querying and the request pipeline, relevance and text analysis, faceting, suggesters and more — with hands-on labs throughout.

Scaling & Tuning

Take Solr to production: SolrCloud, sharding and replication, capacity planning, JVM and query performance tuning, and the trade-offs behind going big, going cloud and going fast.

Operations (OPS)

Run Solr with confidence: cluster operations, monitoring, backups and recovery, upgrades, security and the operational procedures and best practices that keep search healthy.

Tailored training

A course built around your stack and your questions — pick the modules that matter, bring your own schema and data, and get straight to what your team needs.

Not sure which track fits? Tell us what you're working on and we'll shape the right course.

Jan Høydahl

You won’t be taught by a course-reader working from someone else’s slides. Every class is taught by Jan Høydahl — a member of the Apache Software Foundation and an Apache Lucene & Solr committer and PMC member, one of the people who build and steer Solr itself.

Jan has worked in IT since 1995 — he was FAST Search & Transfer’s second professional-services consultant in 2000 — and has spent well over two decades deploying enterprise search in the field. That’s the difference in the room: beyond delivering the curriculum in an engaging, interactive way, he answers the hard questions your own project throws up — the schema that won’t score right, the cluster that won’t stay up, the query that’s too slow — in depth, from real experience rather than the manual.

Training is run through Cominvent AS, Jan’s independent Solr consultancy — so the same person who tunes production Solr clusters for a living is the one teaching your team.

What students say

Trusted by teams learning Solr

OpenText contracted Jan to teach two Solr classes — one for developers, one for support and pre-sales. We asked for a custom curriculum and Jan delivered per our requests. Both classes spanned several international time zones, and Jan was very flexible and adaptable. His ability to explain both simple and complex subjects was very good.

Incentro contracted Jan for a Solr training to teach us how Solr interacts with the e-commerce, CMS and DMS platforms we work with. We were really pleased with the explanations and how he adapted to the level of each person. Jan has really good Solr knowledge and really good teaching skills — I can highly recommend him for your Solr training needs.

Jan conducted a training session for a mixed group at DBC — our Java developers, PHP developers and system consultants. DBC runs the national union catalogue for the Danish libraries, and the training brought our teams up to speed on modern search.
